A new lens!

After eyeing them for a long while, I finally sprung for an ultra-wide angle lens for my dSLR! Gone are the days of not being able to fit the whole mountain in the picture! Besides being able to fit more into the frame, wide angle allows for dramatic perspective and interesting angles which I have been enjoying immensely. Here are a few shots from around campus over the last few weeks as I've had the time to get out and play with the lens:

It's been a cold winter. Several feet of ice formed on Beebe lake, thawed enough to break up a bit, then froze solid again. I'm several yards out on the lake to get this picture, but don't worry. It was well below freezing, and had been for several days.

AD White Reading room: Last time I posted a pic of this room I really, really wanted a wide angle. (see Oct 17 post) Here, fulfilled!

McGraw Tower is another place I have wished for a wide angle before. The theoretical angle of the new lens at its widest is 104 degrees, which means I can include the tower wall (straight down) and the horizon (cropped a little here) in the same frame!

Using the lights illuminuating McGraw tower against the cold dusk sky to create some interesting color contrast. Fun with perspective! That is Cayuga Lake in the background, of course.

More fun with perspective. This is just some house in my neighborhood.

Ithaca falls (Also right in my neighborhood) at sunset. (HDR image composition)
